Brief History of Canadian Tire

Have you ever wondered how Canadian Tire came into existence? Well, here is a brief history of Canadian Tire:

1922: John W. and Alfred J. Billes and John W. established Canadian Tire in 1922. With a combined savings of $1,800, they bought the Hamilton Tire and Garage Ltd. located at the corner of Gerard and Hamilton Streets in Toronto.

1923: Following the sale of Hamilton Tire and Garage Ltd., the Billes brothers relocated to the corner of Yonge and Gould under the name of Canadian Tire Corporation.

1928: These brothers produced the first catalogue featuring tire values on one side and a handy roadmap of Ontario on the back.

1934: The Hamilton store became the first officially designated Canadian Tire Associate Store. This milestone served as a catalyst for the development of Canadian Tire’s highly successful nationwide Dealer-operated network of Canadian Tire Associate Stores.

1958: Canadian Tire’s first gas bar opened at Yonge and Church Streets in Toronto.

1963: Canadian Tire’s new distribution center opened at Sheppard Avenue in Toronto.

1972: Canadian Tire celebrated its 50 years of existence with the first store opened in Saskatchewan.

Over the years till today, Canadian Tire has developed into a trusted friend in the Canadian retail landscape.
